Permits allow you to build, alter, remove or repair certain structures. Raleigh uses permits to make sure projects follow local zoning laws and state and national safety standards.
Before Applying for a Building Permit
Find out if your property is considered residential or non-residential (commercial).
- Residential = Housing including single-family homes, duplexes, triplexes, and quadplexes
- Non-Residential (Commercial) = multifamily apartments, offices, business spaces, and places people assemble such as malls and arenas
Note: Multifamily buildings are regulated by the North Carolina Commercial Building Codes.
