What Are Demographics?

The word “demographics” comes from Greek roots meaning “measurement of people.” It includes data such as age, race, employment, household size, and marital status. These facts help city leaders make informed decisions and maintain Raleigh’s quality of life.

The Planning and Development Department collected and analyzed this data into the Data Book. It was a yearly publication that provided a static snapshot of Raleigh’s demographics. The Data Book was last published in 2020. Coming later this year, a new data dashboard will be launched to provide more current and interactive information for residents and City staff.

Census Information

The census is a nationwide count of every person living in the United States. It takes place every 10 years and helps determine how federal funds are distributed, how voting districts are drawn, and supports programs such as Head Start, SNAP, school meals, and unemployment benefits.
