We’re seeking historic preservation professionals and community members to take part in the Historic Preservation Plan. Get involved.
What is a Historic Preservation Plan?
This plan will guide the citywide approach to historic preservation by setting clear short- and long-term goals and actions. It supports the continued growth and success of the program and will supplement the 2050 Comprehensive Plan while aligning with the City’s overall goals.
What Will this Plan Include?
The plan will pull together all of Raleigh’s historic preservation efforts like programs, goals, needs, and opportunities, into one comprehensive document. It will build on the City’s long-standing preservation work and create a more coordinated and sustainable approach. Key elements include:
- Highlighting how historic preservation shapes Raleigh’s character, supports a resilient economy, and enhances the experience of residents and visitors.
- Gathering input from advisory groups and the community through meetings and engagement events to guide priorities.
- Identifying important landmarks, sites, and landscapes that are being preserved, need preservation, or are at risk.
- Creating strategies for local organizations and agencies to guide decisions and improve preservation of Raleigh’s historic and cultural resources over the next 15–20 years.
The plan aims to reflect how the community is evolving. It will answer questions about:
- What to preserve?
- How to preserve?
- Who preserves?
- How can people’s stories be shared through places?
How Can I Get Involved?
Be part of building the Historic Preservation Plan. We’re looking for residents to help set the vision for protecting the places that are important to the community.
Technical Advisory Group
This group will include up to 15 historic preservation professionals familiar with the City’s Historic Preservation Program. They will share their expertise throughout the planning process.
Members will:
- Attend at least three meetings before the project ends in 2027.
- Review draft materials between meetings.
Community Working Group
This group will consist of up to 15 residents who care about the city’s history, stories, cultures, and important places. No historic preservation experience is required.
Members will:
- Attend at least three meetings before the project ends in 2027.
- Review materials sent before each meeting.
- Connect with people in their communities to share information about the Plan and gather input.
- Participate in broader in-person engagement events.
Selection Process
A commitment is required to serve as a member of the Technical Advisory Group and Community Working Group. Members who are not paid to participate through their job will receive compensation of $20/hour.
Member selection will be based in part on availability. Our goal is to create well-rounded groups that represent different parts of Raleigh, lived experiences, and a mix of technical skills. If you aren’t selected, there will still be many other ways to participate in the process. We hope you’ll join in!

To apply on paper
You may pick up a paper application at the Customer Service Center at One Exchange Plaza - 4th Floor. Please email the Historic Preservation Team at HistoricPreservation@raleighnc.gov if you need to mail or drop off your application. Completed paper applications must be received by Wednesday, October 7 at 11:59 p.m.
