Wake BRT - New Bern Avenue

Fast, Safe, and Reliable Transit for Everyone.

New Bern Corridor - Most Recent Update:

The Wake BRT: New Bern Corridor project is fully designed, and the City hired a contractor for phase one of the construction. On July 1, 2025, the Raleigh City Council awarded the first phase of the construction contract to Rifenburg North Carolina, LLC for $28.7 million.

The City of Raleigh hosted a pre-construction meeting for the Wake BRT: New Bern Avenue project on August 18, 2025, at John Chavis Memorial Park. Community members had the opportunity to meet the project team, learn about the construction schedule, and ask questions about what to expect during construction.

Construction is scheduled to begin this fall. Thank you to everyone who attended and engaged with the project team. You can view the meeting presentation here.

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is coming to our region! Planning is underway for fast, safe, and reliable transit service along four key corridors in Wake County. This page is about the New Bern Avenue Corridor, connecting downtown Raleigh with WakeMed and New Hope Road.

New Bern Avenue will be the first corridor to begin BRT construction. There are two major focus areas for BRT planning in Raleigh:

  1.  Design + Construction of the BRT routes, stations, and bus lanes, and;
  2. Station Area Planning which focuses on community planning for the amenities and areas within a short walk of BRT stations.
