May is Building Safety Month

Building safety - it’s mission critical

Safety in the built environment is an essential component of maintaining public health, making Building Safety Month more relevant now than ever. Building Safety Month celebrates advances in constructing safe, sustainable, affordable, and resilient buildings and homes around the world.

The 2024 campaign theme is “Mission Possible” and includes the weekly themes below.

Week One: Understanding the Mission

May 1-5
Building Safety Month is an annual public awareness campaign observed in May. Each week we'll highlight the role that building codes and regulations play in protecting people like you. Be sure to follow @RaleighPermits on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (X).

Week Two: Preparing a Building Safety Plan

May 6-12
Preparing a building safety plan helps to ensure a building, as well as the property itself, are protected. To prepare for an emergency, check out the Ready Raleigh Guide. This guide contains information about:

  • How to contact government agencies for specific information before or after an emergency
  • How to compile an emergency kit for your household
  • What to do during specific natural and man-made hazards.

Week Three: Learning from the Pros

May 13-19
This week we will shine a spotlight on building safety professionals, including what they do, how to work with them, and how to become one yourself. Stay tuned for more information and follow @RaleighPermits on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (X).

Week Four: Get Kids Involved

May 20-26
Kids learn the basics of building safety from an early age – without even knowing it! The International Code Council has put together a fun Kids Corner page to help teach kids what building safety professionals do, and how they make our homes and communities safer for everyone. Kids can work through a Building Safety Month activity book to complete their training and earn a certificate as a Junior Code Official.

Week Five: Celebrating Success in Building Safety

You can find us out in the community at two events this Spring. We hope to see you!
