Camp Friendly Camp Exploration Camp Registration

After careful consideration, Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources will offer select, modified camp programs from June 29, 2020, through August 7, 2020. See more information here.

The following camps are community-based recreation programs specifically designed to provide recreation and leisure opportunities for individuals with disabilities in a camp environment that is safe, fun, allows independence, and enhances the quality of life.

Camp fees will be pro-rated to $120 for all camp sessions during the week of June 29-July 2. All participants should bring a labeled lunch, 2 snacks, a water bottle and a change of clothes daily.

Camp Friendly

Ages 6-15 years

Camp Friendly is offered at two locations:

  • Durant Nature Preserve - Located in northeast Raleigh, Durant Nature Preserve provides our campers outdoor, open space and opportunities for natural resource-based recreation and environmental experiences. You will find more nature-based, adventure type activities at this location.
  • Carolina Pines Community Center - Located on Lake Wheeler Road, Carolina Pines hosts many other camps throughout the summer in addition to Camp Friendly. Utilizing the center’s many sports courts and fields, activity rooms and playgrounds, campers will experience a more traditional type summer day camp experience.

Camp Friendly offers 3 different sessions according to the functional abilities of the camper. Please thoroughly review the expectations for campers in each session and select the session that bests represents the functional level of your camper. Camps are staffed according to the number of campers registered for each session.

Day Session

The Day Session is for campers who can engage appropriately in a small group setting (approximately 6-8 campers with 2-3 staff). Campers are expected to follow basic rules of safety and interaction, have a moderate level of independence with toileting, feeding and personal care needs, and easily understand and follow directions.

Behavior: staff will provide positive behavior support, redirection, preferred activities, and use behavior support strategies provided by families. Campers are expected to exhibit appropriate camp behavior, without presenting a safety concern to themselves, other campers or staff.

Feeding: staff will provide verbal and visual prompting, reminders, assist with placement of food, break up food into small pieces, open containers for the camper. Campers should be able to physically feed themselves.

Participation: staff will engage campers through multiple means of instruction, sensory engagement, supported transitions, and program modifications. Campers are expected to stay with their group, follow given/modeled direction, and demonstrate engagement during camp activities, during transitions, and in the community on field trips.

Toileting & Personal Care: staff will provide verbal and visual prompting, assist camper with pull-up/diaper and/or clothing. Campers should be able to clean/wipe themselves with minimal assistance from staff.

Mini Session

Mini sessions are available for campers needing more individualized assistance in areas such as behavior management, feeding, personal care & toileting, or who require additional time to process information and directions to safely engage and participate. Campers in the Mini Session are included in a small group environment with other Day and PA Session Campers. An additional counselor is available to the group for each mini camper, to provide the additional support as needed. Counselors are not able to provide a separate, individualized camp curriculum, or be pulled away from the small group for an extended time.

Behavior: staff will provide positive behavior support, redirection, preferred activities, and use behavior support strategies provided by families. Campers are expected to exhibit appropriate camp behavior, without presenting a safety concern to themselves, other campers or staff. Unsafe behaviors may include but are not limited to: biting, hitting, kicking, pinching, running, spitting, etc.

Feeding: staff will assist with feeding campers, using hand over hand support, according to directions provided by the family.

Participation: staff will engage campers through multiple means of instruction, sensory engagement, supported transitions, and program modifications utilizing strategies provided by families. Campers are expected to stay within their small group area and exhibit moderate engagement with other campers and staff, transition safely with the group, and stay with the group on community on field trips.

Toileting & Personal Care: staff will provide pull-up/diaper and/or clothing changes to support the camper. Campers should be able to assist with moving and transferring their own body weight.

Personal Assistant Session

Campers needing more support for behavior, feeding, mobility, participation or personal care & toileting must provide their own personal assistant and register for the Personal Assistant Session. The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department Personal Assistant Policy requires paperwork to be submitted from both the service provider and the parent/guardian of the participant for approval. These forms must be submitted no less than 2 weeks prior to the Personal Assistant attending camp. Forms not submitted by the appropriate deadline will not be processed in time and the Personal Assistant may not be authorized to attend camp. Any participant registering for a Personal Assistant session should contact the camp supervisor.

Families that register for the inappropriate session of camp will be accommodated if possible in the appropriate session; however, if we are not able to make the accommodation, we will offer a full refund for the week and the camper will be placed on the waitlist for the appropriate session.

Camp Exploration

Ages 16 to 21 years

Camp Exploration is offered at Marsh Creek Community Center in Northeast Raleigh. Utilizing the center’s gym and fields, activity rooms and playground, campers will experience a traditional summer day camp.

Camp Registration

Specialized Recreation Summer Camp registration will open as follows:

  • Camp Friendly - Durant Nature Preserve: Monday, March 2
  • Camp Exploration - Marsh Creek: Tuesday, March 3
  • Camp Friendly - Carolina Pines: Thursday, March 5

Walk-in registration for all locations will begin on Monday, March 30, 2020.

Registration for all sessions & weeks of Camp Friendly and Camp Exploration will close on April 29, 2020.

Registration Requirements

  • Forms: after registration, families will receive additional information and required forms to complete via email.  All camper forms must be received by June 1, 2020.
  • Interviews: after forms are completed and returned, the Camp Supervisor will review camper information and schedule a follow-up interview.  The interview is to ensure that the camper is registered in the appropriate session, to ensure they can be most successful at camp.  IF during the interview process, or up to 2 weeks before the camper attends camp, it is determined that the camp program is not suitable, we will grant a full refund for the weeks in which they are registered.  All interviews must occur at least 2 weeks before the camper’s first day of camp.
    • Returning Campers: for campers who attended the same camp in 2019, a phone interview will be scheduled.  
    • New Campers: for campers who are new to the specific camp program in 2020, a live interview with the camper and parent/guardian will be scheduled.  

Any paperwork not received or interviews not completed by the appropriate deadline will forfeit the camper’s space at camp, at which time a full refund will be given.
