Public Art at Neuse River Park

Artist Gabriel Eng-Goetz is creating public art for the Neuse River Park. His work will be installed during the construction of the park and will be on display in spring 2028 when the park opens.

About the Artist

Young man with black hair stands in front of a colorful mural depicting a large brown hand.

Uplifting and aesthetically enhancing North Carolina has been my focus for the past 15 years. Born and raised in Durham, I returned to NC after receiving my BFA in Illustration and Sculpture from Syracuse University to reconnect with my community and work as an artist, curator and youth mentor. The Neuse River Park Public Art Project is of particular interest to me in its ability to tell the explore the natural ecology and cultural history of Neuse River Park. I have years of experience in public art and community engagement, working on numerous public art projects for municipalities - including City of Durham, The City of Raleigh, The Town of Chapel Hill, The City of Morganton NC and Buncombe County.

For large-scale sculptural projects I have experience working closely with fabricators and engineers to achieve safe, durable results. The history of cultural identity and our human connection to nature are constant themes within my work and align well with this project. As an Asian American born and raised in the South, my path towards self identity is constantly changing and I find the process of cultural research and community engagement high rewarding and often cathartic - a beautiful side-effect of creating public art for the masses.

The Neuse River Park property is an 83.6-acre site, originally known as the Leonard Tract. The site is located at 12028 Falls of Neuse Road, northeast of the I-540 Loop and east of Capital Boulevard (U.S. Highway 1). This future park site is located immediately adjacent to the Neuse River. Falls of Neuse Road bisects two portions of the park property, with the only current connection being the Neuse River Greenway, underneath the Falls of Neuse Road Bridge. The City of Raleigh manages an adjacent parcel that is subleased through the State of North Carolina and Army Corps of Engineers, with an existing parking lot, canoe launch, and popular trailhead for the Neuse River Greenway Trail. The State and Army Corps manage additional public recreation facilities in the area around Falls Dam.

You can learn more about plans for the Neuse River as well as possible integrations of Whitewater amenities into the site by reviewing the Neuse River Blueway Plan.

The project timeline for planning, design and construction of these improvements runs from 2023-2028. Learn more about Neuse River Park.

This project is part of the Percent for Art program.
