What is Green Stormwater Infrastructure?

Green Stormwater Infrastructure, or GSI, preserves nature, soil, and waterways, and/or mimics nature by managing, treating, and reducing stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces, like roads, sidewalks, roofs, and driveways.

Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) Policy

Raleigh's Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) Policy became effective on November 28, 2023. The GSI Policy requires the evaluation of GSI on City-led projects and promotes its installation to reduce stormwater runoff, improve water quality, and provide ecological benefits.

In June 2021, Raleigh’s City Council approved the Stormwater Management Advisory Commission’s plan to Advance the Use of Green Stormwater Infrastructure.

GSI Along Roadways

Several Raleigh road projects include bioretention areas. These areas manage the flow of stormwater and remove water pollution coming from a road before it reaches storm drains and streams.

GSI in Parks

We partner with Raleigh Parks to install and maintain GSI in city parks.

The Walnut Creek Gravel Wetland is 5,300-square-feet and captures stormwater runoff coming from Peterson Street and other nearby streets, sidewalks, and buildings. The area prevents about 8 pounds of excess nitrogen and 135 pounds of suspended solids from polluting waterways each year.

The Raleigh Rose Garden Bioretention Area redirects and absorbs stormwater runoff and provides water quality benefits. The plants and soil in the garden slow down the water and filter out pollution before it reaches Beaverdam Creek. Plants in the bioretention area are a mix of native, ornamental grasses and pollinator-friendly flowering perennials and low shrubs.

The Glen Eden Park Bioretention Area captures, absorbs, and cleans stormwater runoff. The plants, mulch, soil, gravel, and underground pipes slows down the water and filters out water pollution before it reaches House Creek and Crabtree Creek.

The Biltmore Hills Park GSI project design includes a bioretention swale at the community center to reduce runoff from the roof, bioretention cells by the community pool to control runoff from the parking lot, and cisterns to harvest and re-use rainwater. These practices will capture and store rainwater, allowing it to infiltrate slowly into the ground. This will reduce water pollution and heavy flows entering Rochester Heights Creek.

Promoting GSI in Private Development

Are you a developer? GSI benefits land development! The City encourages developers to reduce water pollution by using natural and built landscape features to capture and soak up rainwater. Properties and roads with these features have a lower environmental impact on land and they are good for the environment. Learn more about GSI in private development.
