Worthdale Park Stream Restoration and Stormwater Improvements

Stream Restoration and Green Stormwater Infrastructure

The City is restoring three (3) streams and adding wetlands in Worthdale Park. The stream restoration and wetland cells will:

  • Improve water quality in the Walnut Creek watershed
  • Reduce streambank erosion
  • Prevent sediment pollution
  • Enhance wildlife habitat

The project will also include the creation of walking paths, a boardwalk and seating area near the restored streams. Construction of the project(s) will be funded by American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Funding. For more information on funding for this project, visit the ARPA Infrastructure Projects website.

Design

Detailed design and permitting was completed in July 2024.

Public Meeting

We hosted a public meeting on October 4, 2023 to discuss the status of the Worthdale Park Stream Restoration & Stormwater Improvements Project. At this meeting, the City answered questions and solicited feedback on the design from the public.

Construction

Construction is expected to begin in September 2025 and take about six months (March 2026).

What To Expect

During on-site work hours, there may be elevated noise or vibrations. The park and Community Center will remain open during construction. Fencing will be placed around the construction area, restricting access to the public. Some parking spots will be used for construction equipment and materials.

Replanting Trees

Several trees are planned for protection. Other trees that are already in poor condition or in the path of the stream will be removed. Cut trees will be reused to provide in-stream habitat and improve channel stability. Trees and other native plants will be planted during this project. Although it may take multiple years for newly planted trees to reach maturity, the new plants will improve the stream.

Background

Worthdale Creek, East Creek, and West Creek connect and flow through Worthdale Park and continue to flow downstream to Walnut Creek. The three streams combined receive stormwater from approximately 175 acres of developed land, including impervious areas such as streets, rooftops, and parking lots. Impervious areas prevent stormwater from soaking into the ground and increases the amount of runoff and pollutants that reach the stream.

The Worthdale Park Stream Restoration and Stormwater Improvements Project will help improve water quality in Worthdale Creek, East Creek, and West Creek by stabilizing eroded streambanks, reducing stream flow, and enhancing aquatic and riparian habitat.
