Water and Sewer

West Neuse Sewer Interceptor

Project will replace pipes that are currently in poor condition to prepare sewer system for wet weather events that may produce higher amounts of storm water.

This project is in the construction phase and will replace approximately 26,000 feet of existing 48- and 54-inch sanitary sewer pipe with 60- and 66-inch pipe along the west side of the Neuse River. The project will be located upstream from the Neuse River Pump Station.

The project is expected to be completed in two years.

A sewer interceptor is a piece of a sewer network used to control the flow of wastewater. Interceptors receive this wastewater flow from interconnecting sewer lines and sometimes from storm water runoff. This wastewater flow is then directed to a wastewater treatment plant for filtration and disinfection.

Construction

This project was awarded to J.F. Wilkerson Contracting Co., Inc. in May 2022.

The Neuse River greenway will be closed in phases as construction progresses. Phase 1 greenway closure from Anderson Point Park to just north of New Bern Avenue will occur when construction begins in November 2022 with a greenway detour in place. As the construction work moves forward, additional sections of the Neuse River greenway will be closed in future phases. For the safety of the public and construction workers, please observe the greenway closure(s) as this will be an active construction work zone.

The City’s contractor will be on site on or about November 28, 2022 and is scheduled to start with clearing and material set up along Phase 1 of the Neuse River greenway closure. (Greenway Alert)
