Water and Sewer

West Neuse Sewer Interceptor

Project will replace pipes that are currently in poor condition to prepare sewer system for wet weather events that may produce higher amounts of storm water.

This project is in the construction phase and will replace approximately 26,000 feet of 48- and 54-inch sanitary sewer pipe with 60- and 66-inch pipe primarily along the west side of the Neuse River from

Anderson Point Park to Alvis Farm. (map)

The project is expected to be completed in two years.

A sewer interceptor is a piece of a sewer network used to control the flow of wastewater. Interceptors receive this wastewater flow from interconnecting sewer lines and sometimes from storm water runoff. This wastewater flow is then directed to a wastewater treatment plant for filtration and disinfection.

Construction

This project was awarded to J.F. Wilkerson Contracting Co., Inc. in May 2022.

As planned, the Neuse River greenway will be closed in three phases to facilitate this construction work. Phase 1 greenway closure from Anderson Point Park to just north of New Bern Avenue is currently in place and began November 2022. As the construction is progressing, the Phase 2 greenway closure, in addition to Phase 1, will occur November 6, 2023. During this time, the Mingo Creek/Knightdale and Milburnie trail bridge connectors over the Neuse River are also closed with this greenway closure.

As the construction work moves forward, Phase 1 only will be reopened when the greenway in that area has been restored which is scheduled for late Spring 2024. The Mingo Creek/Knightdale trail bridge connector will be reopened with the restoration of Phase 1.

Beginning November 6, the Neuse River greenway will be closed from Anderson Point Park north to the Hedingham community. A greenway detour is not feasible due to unavailable pedestrian connectivity adjacent to the Neuse River greenway trail.

History

Preliminary condition assessment work was completed in 2017. This assessment found a number of issues with the existing sewer system. Should these issues not be corrected, a failure of the system could occur. Bids for project received in April 2022.
