John P. “Top” Greene Community Center

Renovation and Expansion

Project Overview

John P. “Top” Greene Community Center funded by the 2022 Parks Bond, will feature center renovations and expansion with the associated site and stormwater enhancements. South Park Heritage Walk will feature a 2.6-mile loop through parts of downtown Raleigh, the city greenway and park system, and the residential portion of the South Park Neighborhood, featuring interpretive displays.

The current property name is John P. “Top” Greene Community Center, named after John P. “Top” Greene. Throughout the planning and development process, members of the community – primarily represented by the South Park East Raleigh Neighborhood Association (SPERNA) and the Community Advisory Group (CAG) – requested a name change to John P. “Top” Greene African American Cultural Park and the center to John P. “Top” Greene African American Cultural Center to accurately reflect the new mission of the park. SPERNA also initiated a citizen-led petition and accumulated signatures supporting the name change.
