Stormwater Mosaic at Lions Park

Artist, Jeannette Brossart's mosaic work comprised of four 5’h x 3’w panels, was designed as part of the Stormwater landscape project for Lions Park. Early in the community engagement, nature theme and animals were identified as important elements to the work.  The artist worked with information from the Stormwater team, NC Wildlife references, and Park/Community input to identify animal and plant species living in the riparian buffer zone of Piedmont NC waterways, and those would also benefit from healthy Stormwater ecosystems.

Panel 1: Stormwater pipe, start of water flow, yellow boots (human interaction and impact), Frog, Dragonfly, Tadpoles, Chipmunk, Asters, Dwarf Holly

Panel 2: Water flow, River Otter, Monarch Butterfly, Lantana

Panel 3: Water flow, Cardinal, Raccoon, Neuse River Waterdog, Coneflower

Panel 4: Water flow, Fresh Water Mussels, Turtle, Barred Owl, Iris

A well-attended paper mosaic workshop was held for the public at Lions Park Community Center in the Spring of 2025. July classes of Summer Camp children were coordinated to assist with the assembly of the tiles making up the water flow.  The artist assembled some of the animal sections ahead of time so the children could see how their water flow would look with some of the animals in place. The artist captured their work on facemount tape, and took the sections back to the studio to adhere all of the sections to the panels. In October 2025, after the landscaping remodel was complete, the four panels were attached to the Community Center, and grouted in place.

About the Artist

Headshot of Jeannette Brossart

Jeannette Brossart is a mosaic artist based in Durham, NC. Her mosaic designs revolve around nature themes, and often human or animal subjects, where energy abounds. One individual piece of a mosaic may blend into the background, or stand apart and draw attention. It is challenging and exhilarating to transform a piece of glass into a bird feather, human pupil, or leaf blowing in the wind. Creating and facilitating this work with others has been a part of her life since 2003. She has worked with thousands of participants of all ages as well as designed, fabricated, and installed her own works in a variety of settings from public to private, working together with schools, municipalities, museums and non-profits, architects and contractors, as well as homeowners, and private individuals.

Project Details

The Lions Park Green Stormwater Infrastructure installation helps treat stormwater runoff from impervious areas in the park (such as parking lots, sidewalks and roofs), increase wildlife habitat through the use of native plant species, and reduce the amount of pollution that reaches Bridges Branch.
