As part of SEEK Raleigh, artist Sam Greene will collaborate with the Gregg Museum, Friends of the Raleigh Greenway, and community volunteers to create a mural on the greenway tunnel that runs under Pullen Road.

About the Artwork

A colorful mural on the tunnel wall references the imagery of illuminated manuscripts.

A mock-up of the Greenway Tunnel Mural by Sam Greene

Book of Ours is inspired by the beauty and resilience of our native wildflowers and the intricate styles found in illuminated manuscripts. The artwork is a celebration of the restoration that took place along Rocky Branch Greenway. The creek here once struggled through culverts and was forced to adapt to an urban setting, but was reconstructed into a lush habitat filled with life.  This return to nature is portrayed through the vibrant blooms of our native wildflowers, which spill out from the earth to support an illustrated book. The pages of this tome feature animals that behold the miracle of new growth, and a latin phrase that translates to “return to nature.”  The animals bound beyond the constraints of the page to interact with the bounty of flowers that surround them. This mural emphasizes how we can live in harmony with our natural world and work to restore our native landscapes for the benefit of all.
