Since launching its first artist residency program in 2025, Raleigh has integrated artists and creative fellows in the work of several City Departments, including Transportation, Planning, Parks, Community Engagement, and the Office of Strategy and Innovation.

Three artists-in-residents have led the integration of public art in Wake BRT projects. Understanding the benefits of including local culture, history, and art in community projects, the City continues to work with local artists to identify opportunities for art integration within the Wake BRT corridor projects.

Dix Park Artist-in-Residence

Landscape architect and environmental artist Preston Montague is the inaugural Artist in Residence at Dorothea Dix Park. Preston's work blends ecological restoration with art to create spaces that deepen connections to nature and history. His work Memory is a Hearth is a living installation composed of native grassland ecosystems planted in key locations throughout Dix Park.

Nature Preserves Residency

Scott Hazard is the Artist in Residence for the City of Raleigh’s Nature Preserves. His work explores the relationship between people and the natural environment through sculpture, mixed media, and wall-mounted works. Incorporating elements of environmental art, land art, and sustainable practices, his site-specific projects engage both the landscape and the community. Hazard will continue creating artwork and leading public programs through early 2026.

Performing Arts Creative Education Fellowship

The Performing Arts Creative Education Fellowship is a new initiative designed to expand access to performing arts education through community centers and public facilities. Seed Art Share, led by Executive Director Renée Wimberley, is the City of Raleigh’s Performing Arts Creative Education Fellow.

Wayfinding Artist-in-Residence

Artist Katie Stewart is working with the City of Raleigh Department of Transportation to design and install creative wayfinding signs in downtown Raleigh, which help visitors navigate between sites and create family-friendly itineraries and routes.

Creating Living Archives

Juli Leonard and Johnny Andrews of StoryShed Studio were the first Documentarians-in-Residence for the City of Raleigh from 2024-2025.  Their residency connected with neighborhoods and city services by celebrating the unique narratives of Raleigh residents.
