Documentarians-in-Residence: Creating Living Archives

A Raleigh Arts Public Art Residency

Did you grow up along the New Bern Corridor?

Tell your story! We are working with the community to collect and share stories. This may include sharing historic family photos or oral history interviews (limited slots available). Submit the contact form for our team to get in touch with you.

Your input will help create a living archive to tell stories reflective of Raleigh’s diverse population.

We want to hear from residents like you! The City of Raleigh is working on new ways to bring City services and engagement directly to neighborhoods and communities.

As part of this effort, the City is teaming up with StoryShed Studio, a community-driven documentary studio that helps capture and preserve local voices. StoryShed Studio was selected as the City's first Documentarians-in-Residence, one of five Artist-in-Residence programs.

Documentarians-in-Residence

StoryShed Studio is comprised of Johnny Andrews and Juli Leonard. Both documentarians have over 20 years of experience in still, audio and video storytelling., have degrees in communications and have worked as community photojournalists for over 20 years. They each reside in Raleigh and share the same passion for collaborative storytelling, deep listening and finding beauty in the everyday.

This Artist Residency is part of the City’s Arts and Cultural Resources (ACR) Strategic Plan Initiative 2.1, which aims to broaden access to our collective history and stories. The artists will collaborate with City teams to amplify local voices, activate public spaces, enhance accessibility, and create welcoming spaces for learning and connection.

This is a joint project of the Office of Community Engagement, Office of Strategy and Innovation and Raleigh Arts.
