Flood Hazard Mitigation Program

We work with property owners on a voluntary basis to buy and restore floodprone areas developed before current floodplain regulations.

Benefits

Returning these areas to green space:

  • Keeps residents safe;
  • Allows the floodplain to function naturally; and,
  • Reduces flooding impacts.

When structures are no longer in the floodplain - the water can fan out, slow down, and soak into ground more easily.

Projects

  • Capital Inn property on Capital Boulevard. This project is part of Raleigh's larger revitalization efforts for Capital Boulevard.

Funding for these projects comes from the City's stormwater utility and FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.
