West Street Extension Flood Study
Improving Stormwater Drainage and Flooding
Updated: Nov 10, 2025
This project will find drainage improvements that will control and reduce street flooding from the West Street Extension Project.
We plan to complete the flood study in Winter 2026. We are also planning a short-term project for flooding at Raleigh Union Station while the long-term project is being developed.
Background
The West Street Extension Project will provide better connectivity for pedestrians, bicyclists, and vehicles supporting the increased transit associated with Raleigh Union Station and businesses on either side of the railroad tracks. and eliminate flooding at the Raleigh Union Station entrance.
What Raleigh Stormwater Is Doing
We are doing a flood study to find solutions that will reduce flooding at Raleigh Union Station on West Street. We will build a new drainage system along West Street, under the railroad tracks, and tie into the recently constructed drainage system along West Cabarrus Street.
