Parks and Recreation

Village Lakes Community to Walnut Creek Trail

Neighborhood & Community Connections Program

Project Overview

This project is part of the Neighborhood & Community Connections (N&CC) Program. The N&CC Program is an effort to identify, prioritize, and build new, walkable connections to parks and greenways. The N&CC Program was designed to promote health equity throughout the City, using geo-spatial modeling and data analysis to guide investment in those communities which are most at-risk of negative health outcomes and most in need of improved access to outdoor recreation opportunities.

The project includes the construction of a 10-foot wide asphalt trail from the end of Centipede Trail in the Village Lakes Community to the Neuse River trail at mile marker 16.50.

This N&CC projects is funded through the 2022 Parks Bond Referendum and include projects that are primarily focused on improving access to both recreation facilities and greenway trails.

History

The Capital Area Greenway System was first adopted by the Raleigh City Council in 1976. This plan proposed a system of linear parks located primarily along rivers, streams, and creeks and included the opportunity for an interconnected system of pedestrian trails across the region.
