Caraleigh Park Improvements Project

Renovations Funded by Accessibility for Parks Grant

Upcoming Engagement

A public art pop-up event is happening at Caraleigh Park on Saturday, June 14, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.! Join us to provide feedback on the public art design for the park, and to enjoy popsicles and a hands-on paper art activity.

Project Overview

Caraleigh Park is an existing 0.57-acre neighborhood park, located at 110 Maywood Avenue, approximately 1 mile south of Downtown Raleigh. In March 2023, the City of Raleigh was selected to receive an Accessibility for Parks Grant, which will be used for universal design-focused renovations to Caraleigh Park, with a special emphasis on sensory play.

Proposed improvements include a new, ADA-accessible ramp to access the park, renovations to the basketball court, a new playground with safety surfacing and sensory-focused play, as well as general improvements to the open space, landscaping, and shade. Additionally, the project will include upgrades to the existing bus stop, potentially including a pad and furnishings.

Public Participation Process

The planning process for the Caraleigh Park Improvements Project will follow the Involve pathway, as outlined in the City of Raleigh Public Participation Playbook.

Accessibility for Parks Grant

On March 10th, Governor Roy Cooper announced that the Parks and Recreation Authority has awarded $9.6 million in park accessibility grants for 21 projects across the state. The 2021 state budget included $10 million for the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund to provide matching grants to local governments for parks facilities for children and veterans living with disabilities. The awards were granted during a March 3 meeting of the authority. The reach of the funded parks and recreation projects reflect Governor Cooper’s ongoing efforts to strengthen communities.

The City of Raleigh received $300,000 in funding, which will be used for universal design-focused renovations to Caraleigh Park, with a special emphasis on sensory play.  Raleigh Parks looks forward to collaborating with the local community, the Mayor’s Committee for Persons with Disabilities, and the Specialized Recreation and Inclusion Services team to create an inclusive and fun built environment.
