Durant Nature Preserve Stream Restoration

Study and Design

We are exploring options to repair a stream at the Durant Nature Preserve. The study is looking at how we can stop active erosion of the streambanks. Improvements will reduce the amount of sediment pollution in the Perry Creek watershed.

Planning

The consultant started the study in November 2020. The study included:

  • Doing field surveys to assess stream conditions;
  • Determining if a stream restoration is the best option for the area; and,
  • Creating three design options based on those findings.

We're reviewing the study and initial design options. This information will help us determine next steps for the project. More details coming soon.

An eroded stream at Durant Nature Preserve in Raleigh

An eroded stream at Durant Nature Preserve in Raleigh. This stream also has a head cut or an abrupt vertical drop in the streambed, which impacts the quality and function of the stream.

Schedule

Date Activity
Winter 2020 Project planning began
Fall 2020 Project study begins
Winter 2021 Study complete; Project design started
TBD Project design complete
TBD Project construction phase (depending on study findings)

Background

Other stormwater projects at the preserve include repairs to the lower dam and a study for the upper lake. Now, we are focusing on a stream that flows into the lower lake at the preserve.

Improvements will:

  • Reduce erosion;
  • Improve stream health and water quality; and,
  • Reduce the amount of sediment going to the lower lake.

We also plan to provide an educational component at the nearby trail when the project is complete.
