The City of Raleigh is committed to improving bicycle safety by testing new products and strategies that create more separation between people driving and people biking. One product being tested is a bolt-down curb stop, which serves as a vertical barrier between the travel lane and the bike lane. This pilot project will help the City evaluate how well the curb stops work and whether they are a good long-term solution.
Pilot locations are selected based on existing bike lanes, the connections they provide, and the different driveway and street access needs along the corridor. These conditions allow staff to test different placement strategies while maintaining access for vehicles of various sizes. The pilot will also help the City evaluate the durability of the curb stops and identify future maintenance needs.
To measure the project's effectiveness, the City will collect data before installation and again about six to nine months after the curb stops are installed. Both sets of data will be posted on this webpage for each pilot location. In addition to studying driver behavior, staff will evaluate how the curb stops affect driveway access, solid waste bin placement and collection, and the overall safety and experience for people biking.
