The Building Blocks of City Planning
The Raleigh Planning Academy provides residents with a greater understanding of the stages of city planning and development.
Students will learn:
- What are the driving factors for so much growth in Raleigh?
- What specifically guides land use in the city?
- How do all levels of government play a role in planning?
- How to navigate rezoning cases, permit applications, site reviews, and more.
- The many ways for residents to engage in the planning process.

Community Voices: Increase the quantity, quality, and representation of community voices involved.
Strong Connections: Create valuable connections between the community, City staff, and others.
Community Support: Collaborate and exchange ideas that will drive the future growth of planning.

The Planning Academy is more than just an educational opportunity. It’s a chance to connect with planning professionals and community members to:
- Build valuable connections and access resources to help them advocate for neighborhood projects.
- Participate in collaborative activities that spark creative decision-making in the planning process.
- Become community ambassadors, using the learned skills, resources, and established connections.
How to Apply
The Planning Academy a free course open to residents aged 18 and older who live within the city limits. There is an application process, and students are chosen by a selection committee. Each cohort is limited to 30 people.
- Locate your Council District: This helps us select a representative sample of residents from across the Raleigh community.
- Complete: The Planning Academy application.
- Location: Planning Academy is held at a variety of Raleigh Community Centers (Location will be shared once applicants confirm their participation)

The next Planning Academy will take place over 5 weeks on the following Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8 p.m.: October 7, 14, 21, 28, and November 4.

What to Expect
We often have a great amount of interest in Planning Academy, so if your application is not accepted for this particular cohort, you may reapply for other cohorts in the future.
