Ride Into History: Celebrate America’s 250th Birthday
May is Preservation Month and Bike Month, and this year we’re celebrating America’s 250th birthday, too! Hop on your bike for a ride into history. The Raleigh Historic Development Commission (RHDC), in partnership with the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission (BPAC) and Raleigh Sister Cities, is hosting the 3rd annual Raleigh Historic Bike Ride. This year, the 5-mile route will feature stops at five Raleigh Historic Landmarks that span 250 years of the city’s building history! RHDC volunteers at each site will share a brief history of the property and talk about what else was going on in Raleigh during that time.
The stops include:
- Joel Lane House - 160 S. St. Mary's St. – Raleigh's oldest surviving dwelling
- State Capitol & Union Square - 1 E. Edenton St. – The heart of North Carolina government
- Early Store Building (Heilig-Levine) - 137 S. Wilmington St. – 150+ years of downtown commerce
- Chavis Park Carousel - 505 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. – A historic park and carousel
- (Former) BB&T Building - 227 Fayetteville St. – A downtown Raleigh icon
Come Prepared
The ride will begin and end at Exchange Plaza between Fayetteville and Wilmington Streets in downtown. Riders are encouraged to bring their own bikes and helmets. Free scooter rentals and Cardinal Share e-bikes will also be available. Water and restrooms are available at the City of Raleigh Museum before/after the ride, but are not provided along the route - please plan accordingly.
While the ride route prioritizes bike-friendly streets, there are several hills along the way. See the mobile history tour, which includes information about each stop, at raleighhistoric.org. Check back here before May 2 for further details.
