Types of Permits
Hospitality programs enrich the Raleigh community by increasing vibrancy. These programs include the private use of public space (PUPS) with newsracks, pushcarts, and street performers; outdoor seating; and Raleigh's social districts.
Raleigh City Code and Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) governs the private use of public space (PUPS), and outdoor seating within the city. Our office has created a Hospitality Programs Guide that provides relevant policies and procedures in a user-friendly manner to assist with obtaining a permit. All applicants should review this guide prior to applying for a permit, so they are aware of the complexities that come with holding a City of Raleigh permit. The guide covers the following:
- Types of hospitality permits
- Design standards and guidelines
- Permitting process overview
- Fees
- Rules, regulations, and other considerations
- Frequently asked questions
**Other PUPS permits include: a-frame signs, awnings, minor encroachments, overhead signs, and are managed by Planning and Development.
