Welcome! We’re excited to have you volunteer with Raleigh Parks. To help you feel prepared and confident, we’ve gathered answers to our most common questions—plus tips to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience.

Use the “jump‑to” buttons above to navigate quickly to the information you need.

Proper Attire

Each volunteer project will list its own attire guidelines, but in general, please dress for the weather and the type of work.

Recommended:

  • Hiking boots or tennis shoes with good traction
  • Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing
  • Refillable water bottle

Not allowed:

  • CROCS, TEVAS, CHACOS, or any open‑toed shoes
  • These do not provide adequate foot protection and are not permitted at our volunteer events

Weather Information

Volunteer events are held rain or shine unless conditions become unsafe.

Tips:

  • Check the forecast before heading out.
  • Bring sunscreen, a hat, and layers depending on the season.
  • If severe weather is predicted, we will send updates via email and post them on the event page.
  • Volunteers often use WRAL or their preferred weather app for up‑to‑date local forecasts.

Children & Pets

Can I Bring My Child or Pet?

  • Children: Yes! Children may attend as long as they meet the age requirement listed for that specific project. Age limits are based on tool use, terrain, and safety considerations. Please supervise your child at all times.
  • Pets: For the safety of volunteers and wildlife, pets are not permitted at volunteer events unless they are service animals.

Proof of Hours

Can Someone Sign Off on My Volunteer Hours for School or Community Service?

Yes! Staff can verify hours for school, clubs, employment programs, or other service requirements.

You have three options:

  1. Ask the project leader to sign your paper form at the event.
  2. Download/print your hours directly from your CERVIS account (instructions here).
  3. If your school or program uses a digital platform, we can verify hours electronically as well.

Registration Information

We ask that all volunteers register in advance. This helps us plan for supplies, staffing, and communication—especially regarding weather or location changes.

Walk‑ups may not be permitted if:

  • The event is full
  • The project requires a safety briefing
  • Waivers have not been completed
  • Tool or staff availability is limited

Please always register ahead of time.

Release Form Info

All volunteers must electronically sign the City of Raleigh volunteer release form within their CERVIS profile once a year. You’ll be notified when it’s time to sign again. This can also be done in person in a paper form. Signing ahead of time saves us time and trees!

Do I Need a CERVIS Profile?

Yes. Every volunteer, individual, and group member must create their own CERVIS profile and complete the required waivers.

For step-by-step directions on how to use CERVIS (i.e. register, log hours, print volunteer history), please view the instructional video.

Can I Register My Coworkers Under My Account?

No. Each participant must have their own profile for safety and documentation purposes.

Corporate or Group Registration

We love working with companies and community groups!

Here’s how it works:

  • Each participant must create their own CERVIS profile.
  • A designated group lead may contact our team to coordinate scheduling, project type, or attendance tracking.

Volunteers With Disabilities

We welcome volunteers of all abilities and are committed to creating an inclusive, meaningful experience for everyone.

If you or someone in your group needs accommodations, please email the Event Organizer listed on the registration page before the event. We are also happy to help identify suitable projects.

Accommodations may include:

  • Modified tasks
  • Alternative tools
  • Accessible routes or meeting locations
  • Additional staff assistance

Our goal is to ensure every volunteer can participate fully and safely.

Additional Tips

  • Arrive 5–10 minutes early for check‑in.
  • Bring any personal medications you may need (e.g., inhaler, EpiPen).
  • Hydration is important — bring water!
  • If you need to cancel, please update your registration so we can open your spot to others.
