Public Art at Red Hat Amphitheater

In 2026, the City of Raleigh selected the artist team of Taylor White, Gabriel Eng-Goetz, and Matt McConnell to create new public art as part of the Red Hat Amphitheater relocation project. The public art will be located on the Performing Arts Parking Deck, an existing structure facing the new amphitheater location, elevating the aesthetics of a prominent city structure and reflecting the cultural and creative character of downtown Raleigh.

About the Artists

Three artist headshots

Taylor White, Gabriel Eng-Goetz, and Matt McConnell

Taylor White is a Raleigh-based painter and muralist whose work explores the tension between structure and spontaneity. Known for large-scale public installations that blend realism and abstraction, her compositions transform color and gesture into immersive spatial experiences. With major commissions for projects such as Hub RTP, Tysons Corner Center, Jamestown LP, and Mack Real Estate Group, her public commissions include multiple large-scale installations across corporate, municipal, and mixed-use developments.

Gabriel Eng-Goetz is an award-winning visual artist and designer whose work examines cultural identity, community, and the way visual storytelling can shape a shared sense of place. Based in Durham, he has created site-specific installations and murals throughout the Southeast. His large-scale public art projects, commissioned by cities, universities, and private developers, combine narrative, pattern, and natural motifs to celebrate local heritage and collective memory.

Matt McConnell is a sculptor, designer, and founder of McConnell Studios, an interdisciplinary fabrication studio recognized for merging art, architecture, and engineering. His practice explores how natural forces of growth, motion, and transformation can be expressed through durable sculptural form. Since establishing his studio in 2001, he has led more than 500 public and private commissions across the United States and abroad, and his work spans a variety of materials, including steel, aluminum, glass, light, and composite structures.

About the Project

In 2010, Red Hat Amphitheater was built on land intended for the expansion of Raleigh Convention Center (RCC). With RCC now at capacity, an expansion project has been funded, and the amphitheater is being relocated one block south. The relocation project provides an opportunity for new public artwork at the Performing Arts Parking Deck which can enhance downtown Raleigh’s artistic identity. The proposed artwork will be a bold, vibrant piece in a high traffic location and expand safety objectives for the Amphitheater.
