Public Art at Lake Lynn Park

Artist team A Gang of Three was chosen in 2024 to create public art as part of planned improvements to Lake Lynn Loop Trail.

In fall 2024, the group held several sessions at the lake to engage passersby about the project and encourage participation. Visitors were asked to imagine the lake as an entity with a memory and a voice, and to consider what they might ask it. They could mail postcards or send digital messages through a website, Letters to the Lake. The “lake” then composed poems in response to the inquiries, stories, and secrets people shared. For phase two, the artists invited letter-writers and the broader community to a co-creation event at Lake Lynn Community Center with work stations and art supplies. Animals and wildlife appeared in many of the participant creations.

From these community engagement sessions, the artists have developed a concept that acknowledges and respects the input received in the engagement process. They are proposing a series of life-size animal sculptures that will be scattered throughout the trail. The origami-inspired forms will be made of stainless steel and appear around the lake as graceful spirits and sentinels.

Community Engagement: Letter-writers and community members were invited to a co-creation event at Lake Lynn community center. The Poetry Fox was on hand as a "representative of the lake" to create poems and responses to peoples wishes for the project.

Community Engagement: Participants used clay and other art materials to help co-create ideas for installations around the lake.

Concept Design: A Gang of Three is proposing a series of sculptures throughout the trail that highlight the site's natural beauty while not distracting from it.

Concept Design: A Gang of Three created prototypes of their sculptures and shared them with the community at an event in April 2025.

A Gang of Three is a team of designers focused on creating dynamic, educational interventions that reveal the living history of sites in tangible, meaningful ways. Together, they work to illuminate the human dimension of experience and the power of public space, bringing new meaning into the urban landscape. With expertise in architecture, landscape architecture, installation art, exhibit design, community engagement and user experience, their principal team and collaborating partners bring highly diverse skills to a wide range of projects.

Their previous installation with the City of Raleigh, Alluvial Decoder, helps educate visitors about floodplains and the complex history of Crabtree Creek. The project received numerous professional and design awards and was shortlisted for the International Award for Public Art and a Finalist for the 2024 World Architecture Festival (Global Landscape project of the Year).

About the Project

The Lake Lynn Loop Trail is located in northwest Raleigh and connects the Lake Lynn Community Center to Lynn Road. Picturesque boardwalks make the park a popular destination for local residents. The surrounding neighborhoods are largely residential, and the Lake Lynn trail is well used for recreation, running, walking, and by birders.

Planned improvements will involve rehabilitating the trail, including a new base and asphalt surface, trail widening, grading, and drainage enhancements. There will also be improved access to and from adjacent communities, pavement markings, and pedestrian bridge replacement.
