The City of Raleigh and the Raleigh Arts Commission are pleased to announce the inaugural Raleigh Poet Laureate Johnny Lee Chapman III.
Johnny Lee Chapman III is a multidisciplinary artist, poet, performer, musician, and educator. Through performance, public art, and community workshops, he combines imagination and research to create work that fosters connection and empowers communities. His public artwork includes “Another Day in the Life” at Dorothea Dix Park and “The Iron Code” at Raleigh Iron Works. Chapman is also the founder of Third Place Arts.
The Raleigh Poet Laureate program was launched in 2026 at the State of the City, creating a new opportunity to celebrate poetry, storytelling, and community engagement across the city. Developed through Raleigh Arts in collaboration with local poets, educators, and cultural leaders, the program is designed to elevate poetry as a visible and accessible part of civic life while expanding literary programming in neighborhoods throughout Raleigh.
Chapman will serve a two-year term beginning in summer 2026 and will act as an ambassador for poetry and the literary arts in Raleigh. As Poet Laureate, he will lead public programs, workshops, and community events; commission and present new works; and collaborate with City programs and cultural initiatives throughout Raleigh. Special emphasis will be placed on youth engagement, neighborhood-based programming, and building connections across communities through poetry.
