About the Laureate

Johnny Lee Chapman III

Johnny Lee Chapman III has worked as a professional poet for the past decade, sharing poetry across the city, state, and nation through performances, public art, and workshops. His career includes creating a series of filmed monologues highlighting North Carolina history, sponsored by the North Carolina Museum of Art and the Black on Black Project; becoming a finalist in a national team poetry slam; and completing three years as a fellow at the Watering Hole Writers’ Retreat.

Chapman also co-founded Capital Moments, a biweekly open mic at Transfer Co.; served twice as an artist-in-residence with Carolina Performing Arts; and led Juneteenth workshops for youth summer camps in Henderson, Nevada. Through collaborations with municipal institutions and local artists, he has incorporated poetry into public spaces, including an installation at Gipson Play Plaza. He is currently designing concrete artwork for Raleigh’s New Bern Avenue Bus Rapid Transit project.

Across disciplines, Chapman encourages people of all ages to explore their imaginations and recognize their capacity to create change.

“Never let your ink run dry.”

The Laureate’s First Year

A young black man sitting thoughtfully at a grey book-covered desk, looking sideways at the camera.

For the first few months, Chapman will connect with poets, educators, young people, neighborhood leaders, cultural organizations, and residents to learn how poetry can support and reflect Raleigh’s communities.

Upcoming Programs

Check back this fall for information about programs and performances.

About the Program

In 2026, the City of Raleigh Arts Commission established the Raleigh Poet Laureate program in partnership with the Raleigh Arts. This initiative aims to elevate poetry as a vital part of civic life and creatively expand engagement with youth and neighborhoods. The program will highlight Raleigh’s contributions to the literary arts while celebrating and honoring the voices of working poets in our community.

The Raleigh Poet Laureate will serve a two-year term to support the commissioning of new poems, the creation of a public program series, and service as an ambassador for the city’s literary and creative communities

Program Objectives

  • Raise awareness about the creation, visibility, and appreciation of poetry and the literary arts in Raleigh
  • Support opportunities to incorporate poetry in the cultural life of the city.
  • Bring poetry to Raleigh’s neighborhoods and community spaces.
  • Commission new works.
  • Establish a public program series.

Selection Process

Chapman was selected through a public application process in spring 2026. A committee of artists and community leaders reviewed the applications, interviewed candidates, and recommended Chapman to the Arts Commission for final approval.
