A Work Trip to Detroit, What Happened at the 2025 Strategic Communications: H2O Workshop?

Spoiler… A Continued Commitment to Clean Water.

Welcome sign to the 2025 Strategic Workshop

Last week, the Raleigh Water Communications team took a trip to the Motor City for the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) annual Strategic Communications: H2O Workshop. This conference is the only national event of its kind, focusing mainly on communications issues relevant to the public's clean water. It was an opportunity for the team to absorb some of the best communications strategies happening in the ‘water world’ today and how to apply them to our own happenings here in Raleigh. And we got to be a part of it!

We spent two full days learning, listening to panel discussions, and making connections with other professionals that are driven by the same passion: providing our communities with safe, clean water. That meant car trips, plane rides, and cups (and cups) of coffee to keep us going. Being part of an industry that often operates behind the scenes can come with unique challenges, so it is refreshing to connect with others who face similar issues and share ideas on how to overcome them and create the best systems to benefit you.

Kimberly Holmes-Iverson, the comms team’s fearless leader and communication manager, said it best after returning to the Oak City:

"Our time at the NACWA H2O Workshop in Detroit was truly inspiring! Connecting with fellow water communicators and exploring innovative strategies for community engagement and trust-building has left us energized and ready to dive into our shared water challenges."

Each day featured an array of presenters from across the country, and Jacob Barnhart, Communication Analyst, summarized his time with:

“A key theme of the conference was that meaningful communication cannot exist without substantial trust. My main takeaway from this event is that disinformation has become a reality in communication today.”

The event brought real-life situations to the table to highlight both the best and most challenging aspects of water communications so we can work to provide the best service to you.

“I loved the focus on communications and hearing real-life examples from other cities,” said Communications Administrator Holly Sharp, who enjoyed her time at the conference and is now inspired to put the lessons into use. “Visiting the Motor City was a bonus, and I’m excited to put some of these ideas into action for our customers back in Raleigh.”

While the team did work hard those couple of days, we also got to experience fantastic Mediterranean food and quality time reconnecting as the Raleigh Water Communications team. One point the entire team agreed on: this conference has brought us all renewed excitement to continue to bring strong communication and uphold the promise of clean water for the entire city.

Thank you, Detroit, and all the incredibly welcoming folks who made it such a memorable experience!
