Raleigh Water’s biosolids team showcased how the city turns wastewater into safe, nutrient-rich products for farms and landscaping at the 2026 Southern Farm Show last week.
Visitors got a firsthand look at how the city produces Class A biosolids, which help farms, gardens and landscaping businesses grow healthier plants. The program highlights how sustainable solutions can benefit both the environment and the community.
Chris Sauls, Raleigh Water biosolids manager, said the event was a success. “We were able to sign up 16 new third-party customers for Class A biosolids. We even had a landscaping facility interested in drying it and applying it on lawns. The turnout was fantastic.”
The Neuse River Resource Recovery Facility produces about 40 dry tons of biosolids daily. Each batch is treated to remove harmful bacteria and odors, making it safe for use on fields, lawns and in compost. A backup landfill plan is in place, and the program follows strict environmental rules to ensure safety and sustainability.
