Since 2016, Raleigh Has Installed Thousands of New Water Meters

The City of Raleigh continues to grow and Raleigh Water is ready to keep pace

You may have noticed more construction in your neighborhood. There's new apartment buildings here, a large commercial development there, and multi-family housing under construction.

It’s no surprise that the City of Raleigh is growing. But what does that mean for you and your water?

To get the big picture, let's take a step back and look at some impressive numbers.

Since 2016—in just nine years—Raleigh Water has installed over 43,000 new meters. That means the condos, townhouses, and new builds you’ve noticed popping up around your community have all received brand-new meters. This marks a significant increase compared to previous years. Not only are those new meters being placed, but that also means the City is adding more water mains, hydrants, manholes, sewer mains, valves, pump stations, and blackflows.

If that number doesn’t already sound impressive, here’s another way to look at it. The roughly 43,000 new meters and their services equal the total size of Wake Forest, Garner, and Zebulon combined.

"Earlier 2010 to 2015, Wake Forest was booming," said Raleigh Water's Interim Meters Superintendent, Philip Joyner. "Garner now is starting to boom. Wendell has been booming. Zebulon's starting to grow, but that growth is kind of all over the service area. That's just a representation of the size of the growth. But I've seen, I think far more now on the outskirts of town."

That might sound overwhelming, and you may be wondering—can the City handle this growth? The simple answer is: yes! Raleigh Water serves over 650,000 customers and millions of visitors each year. The City prepares and continues to plan for even more growth in the years ahead.

Exciting things are happening, and Raleigh Water is ready to keep our communities thriving as they expand!
