Barwell Road Improvement Project

Our goal is to make Barwell Road safe for all modes of transportation.

The City is improving Barwell Road from Rock Quarry Road to Berkeley Lake Road.

We want Barwell Road to be safe, convenient, and comfortable for all modes of transportation. We call this a Complete Street.

Improvements to the road include:

  • Designated Two-Way Left Turn Lanes;
  • Sidewalks;
  • Multi-Use-Path;

Project Update

December 11, 2025

Crews are actively clearing trees on Barwell Road. Drivers may encounter lane closures at times, and some delays are possible while this work is in progress. Please use caution when driving through the work zone. Crews are also relocating a waterline near Pearl Road. This work may add extra activity in that area over the next few weeks.

November 15, 2025

Crews have installed tree-protection fencing in the area and are clearing trees along Barwell Road. Clearing typically takes about two to three months to complete. Utility crews are also relocating utilities along the corridor to prepare for upcoming roadway work.

October 22, 2025

During the Oct. 21, 2025, Raleigh City Council meeting, the Council approved the transfer of funds from the Six Forks Road Improvement Project to the Barwell Road Improvement Project. The funding allows the construction team to complete the project's original scope.

September 23, 2025

Construction crews are working on clearing operations along the corridor and underground utility work. In the coming weeks, the contractor will have traffic control in place to facilitate the completion of this work.

August 25, 2025

The construction contractor will start clearing operations and some underground stormwater work at the intersection of Barwell Road and Pearl Road on Tuesday, Sept. 2. There will be no road closures during this work, but there may be some intermittent lane closures. This work is in preparation for the new Pearl Road alignment.

July 25, 2025

We have some good news!

The City is allocating more funding to the project, allowing us to complete the original proposed plans. We are making improvements to Barwell Road between Berkeley Lake Road and Rock Quarry Road, and we will realign Pearl Road to meet the Barwell Road intersection.

How did we get the additional funding?

On July 1, 2025, the City Council approved the reduction in scope for the Six Forks Road Improvement Project and the redirecting of funds to other transportation projects. One of those projects is Barwell Road. Construction is still expected to begin this summer.

Advanced Public Touchpoint - Summer 2020

Based on public feedback from the April 23, public meeting, other public engagement opportunities, and internal discussion and evaluation of both alternatives, we are moving forward with design Alternative 1. This design alternative includes 6-ft sidewalk along the east side of the road and a 10-ft multi-use-path (MUP) on the west side of the roadway.

History

The Barwell Road Widening Project is part of the City’s Capital Improvement Program. Barwell Road is almost exclusively residential and includes the Barwell Road Elementary School and Community Center complex. These improvements will help improve pedestrian and bicycle accessibility from the surrounding properties to the school/park complex.

Public Art

The Barwell Road Project will include a public art component. The City selected UrbanRock Design as the artist for this project.  To learn more about the project, the artist selected, and give your input visit the Barwell Road Public Art Project page.
