Weber House

The Weber House: A Journey to Save Its Past

The Bill and Betty Weber House is a split-level Modernist home designed by architect William Weber. The house, built in 1953 at 606 Transylvania Ave., served as his personal residence. The house was designated a Raleigh Historic Landmark in 2009; however, at the owner's request, this landmark designation was removed in 2014.

In 2023, a demolition permit was filed by the new property owners. Fortunately, the current homeowners, Andy and Melinda Knowles, reached an agreement to postpone the demolition, allowing them to move the structure and preserve it. In 2024, the house was successfully relocated to 1514 Delmont Dr., and it is currently being reconstructed according to its original plans.

A request for a Preservation Revolving Loan Fund was filed in March 2025. A vote by the Raleigh Historic Development Commission (RHDC) to endorse the loan determined that the Weber House meets the historic and architectural criteria to be a Raleigh Historic Landmark once again. The Weber House remains an outstanding example of Modernist design and is a testament to Raleigh's history of relocating significant structures to ensure their preservation.
