Streets and Driveways	Find out about the technical requirements for streets and driveways in Raleigh’s Jurisdiction.
FAQ	What permit do I need to install a new Driveway? We require a right-of-way permit for any work in the right-of-way. When working on a site, other permits may be issued by different departments. I am replacing my driveway. Do I need a permit? Yes, a right-of-way permit is required. I want to widen my existing driveway. Do I need a permit? Yes, a right-of-way permit is required. I am building a new parking pad on the property. Do I need a driveway permit? Permits from other departments will be required. You may receive a right-of-way site final if the work occurs within 5 feet of the right-of-way line. I want to install another driveway on my lot. How far apart do they need to be? Driveway on the same lot must be at least 40 feet apart, measured from inside edge to inside edge. Can I have a gravel driveway? Gravel driveways are not allowed in the right-of-way. On the property, you may have a gravel driveway. What are some of the technical standards for a driveway in the right-of-way? Please see our Transportation - Standard Details. I am on an NCDOT road but within Raleigh’s limits. Who issues my driveway permit? The City of Raleigh issues the residential driveway permit. If this is a commercial development, we sign the driveway permit for NCDOT first and issue a permit when NCDOT approves the plans.
Encroachments	Find out about the process for placing structures in the right-of-way and what is and is not permissible.
FAQ	When do I need an encroachment? A major encroachment is required for anything that would encroach into the public right-of-way. How do I submit my plans? All encroachment requests must be applied for via a registered account in the Permit and Development Portal.
Street, Lane, or Sidewalk Closures	Ask questions about closing a street, lanes, or sidewalks for construction purposes.
FAQ	When do I need a permit to close a lane or sidewalk? A right-of-way occupancy is required for any work occurring in the right-of-way that will close a street, lane, or sidewalk for any construction. How do I submit my plans? All right-of-way occupancy permits must be applied for via a registered account in the Permit and Development Portal. How do I report any damages that occurred after an installer left? You may report any damages at right-of-way concerns.
Sureties and Bonds	Ask questions about sureties and the requirements prior to working in the public right-of-way.
FAQ	Where can I find the required information to upload? We receive all documentation for the initial estimate through our Permit and Development Portal at Infrastructure Surety. How much surety is needed on a City Road? We require a surety for 125% of the amount of construction. How much surety is needed on an NCDOT Road? We require a surety for 100% of the amount of construction. I cannot upload to the portal. What do I need to do? Please contact our Surety Coordinator under Contacts on the Infrastructure Surety webpage. My project has multiple phases. Do I submit one surety for all or one for each phase? Yes, a separate estimate must be submitted for each phase. How can I get my surety reduced? We receive all documentation for the surety reduction through our Permit and Development Portal at Infrastructure Surety. How can I get my surety released? We receive all documentation for the surety release through our Permit and Development Portal at Infrastructure Surety.
