Is firefighting experience or prior training required?

No. The Raleigh Fire Department does not require applicants to have previous firefighting experience or formal training. The department seeks individuals who are highly motivated, physically fit, and able to demonstrate strong reading comprehension skills. While knowledge of the fire service can be helpful once training begins, it is not a requirement for employment.

All candidates will receive comprehensive training through the Raleigh Fire Academy. The program provides the skills and knowledge needed to perform the job safely and effectively.

What is the minimum education requirement?

A high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.

What is the age requirement to apply?

Applicants must be at least 18 years old by the time the application period closes. There is no upper age limit.

Do you get paid while in training?

Yes. When you are accepted into the Raleigh Fire Academy, you become a full time, permanent City of Raleigh employee on your first day of training. Recruits earn the starting firefighter salary and receive the full City of Raleigh benefits package from day one. For details on health coverage, retirement, and other perks, see the Salary and Benefits section.

All new firefighters serve a probationary period beginning on their hire date and ending six months after Academy graduation.

What will I learn in The Academy?

The Raleigh Fire Academy is designed to prepare recruits to respond to medical emergencies, as a certified EMT, and learn the skills needed to be a firefighter in the City of Raleigh. Recruits who complete the Academy will graduate with the certifications of N.C. FF I and II, N.C. HazMat Level 1, and N.C. EMT at a minimum.

How do I apply for the Fire Academy?
