Downtown Raleigh Roadwork Brings Closures and Detours

Nighttime shutdowns and a two-month closure aim to strengthen the city’s water system

Drivers in Raleigh should expect traffic changes downtown as Raleigh Water works on the State Street 3 and 3A water projects. 

  • E. Morgan St. and S. Wilmington St. intersection - closed overnight March 22-27
  • S. Person St., 300-800 blocks, one lane from 7 a.m. To 5 p.m. March 23-27
  • S. Person St., 300-800 blocks, closed March 30-May 29

Overnight detours (March 22-27, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.)

• Northbound on South Wilmington Street:
→ Right on East Hargett Street
→ Left on South Person Street
→ Left on East Edenton Street
→ Right onto South Wilmington Street

• Eastbound on East Morgan Street:
→ Right on South Salisbury Street
→ Left on East Hargett Street
→ Left on South Person Street
→ Right onto East Morgan Street

300-800 South Person Street Closure

A bigger closure starts March 30. The 300-800 blocks of South Person Street will close through May 29, along with nearby intersections at East South, East Lenoir and East Cabarrus streets. Local traffic will still be allowed, but other drivers should expect delays and follow detour signs. Please take time to review the maps included in this article to make navigating the area easier.

Full closure detours (March 30-May 29, weekdays 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
• Northbound on South Person Street:
→ Right on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard
→ Left on South Bloodworth Street
→ Left on East Davie Street
→ Right onto South Person Street

• East or west on East South, East Cabarrus or nearby streets:
→ Follow signs to South Blount Street
→ Head south toward Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard

Drivers should plan ahead, give themselves extra time and review the maps in this article. Parking restrictions will also be in place in work areas.
