Raleigh Children's Orchestra at Sertoma Arts Center

Youth and Teen

Music - Raleigh Children’s Orchestra 

Instructor: Ilse Mann 

Ages: 6-13 years 
Fee: $120 Resident / $135 Non-resident 
Date & Time: Thursdays, March 5 – April 30, 6:15 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. 

The Raleigh Children's Orchestra is a multilevel string orchestra for students in grades 1-7 who have played for six months or more. The orchestra provides a rare opportunity for young players to rehearse and perform in an ensemble setting. For those who are not yet proficient in reading music, parts are available with string names and finger numbers. More experienced players have more difficult parts and leadership opportunities. All will gain fluency in playing and ensemble skills. The semester ends with a free public concert. Students provide their own instruments, music stands and three-ring binders. 8 sessions. No Class: April 2 

 

Jewelry - Youth and Teen Bead Club 

Instructor: Anne Terry 

Ages: 10-16 years

This new club will focus on making beaded jewelry, bead stitches and anything to do with beads of all sizes! Open to all levels of experience. All supplies included. 1 Session.  

 

Teen Pottery - Sculpting Critters 

Instructor: Karina Maxey 

Ages: 13-18 years

Using the base of a hollow ball, learn how to form and build pieces to create creatures such as dogs, cats, possums, raccoons, and more! Experience with clay is helpful but not required. All Supplies are included. 4 Sessions.

Art Journal Explorations 

Instructor: Ashley Bonner 

Ages: 13+ years

Start a new creative practice in this guided art journal creation class. Each week we will have new creative challenges to explore. Starting with a simple, empty notebook, we will explore ways to fill your book with fun techniques and creations. We will examine many different ways to prep the pages of your book for fun experiments and detailed drawings. This class is a great way to go further into your journaling or art sketchbook practice, or to start a new artistic medium! Class time will include options for structured and independent work in your new journals. $10 supply fee due to instructor at start of class for materials. 5 Sessions. No Class: April 3.

What’s in Your Glaze Workshop

Have you ever wondered about glaze and what goes into it? In this workshop we will dive into what makes up a glaze and how to create your own cone 10 glaze recipe. We will dive into materials and the magic of numbers. Supplies are listed on the Sertoma website. 1 Session.

Continuing Garment Sewing: Supportive Bralette and Underwear 

Instructor: Karina Maxey 

Ages: 18+ years 
Fee: $145 Resident / $160 Non-resident 
Date & Time: Monday, April 13 5:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. 

For intermediate sewists who are interested in starting out with making their own underwear. We will be making a supportive bralette without underwires that can be made with or without lace detailing. Techniques used in this class can be applied to making more complex bras in the future. 3 Sessions. 

 

Garment Sewing Guided Studio 

Instructor: Karina Maxey 

Ages: 13+ years

Date & Time: Saturday, March 14 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. 

Are you stuck on a garment project? Confused on how to take your measurements, or read a particular pattern? Do you want help with some garment repair or resizing? Are you crunched for time on a cosplay for a con? Do you want or need company while crafting? Open Studio could be the right fit for you! Students must be ready to work semi-independently with some assistance from our Garment Sewing Instructor who has experience with theatrical costuming and production sewing. 1 Session.  

Jewelry & Metals

Narrative Layered Brooch or Pendant with Betty McKim 

Instructor: Betty McKim 

Ages: 16+ years 
Fee: $166 Resident / $181 Non-resident 
Date & Time: Saturday and Sunday, March 14 and March 15 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. 

The workshop will focus on how to use multiple layers in a collage -like way to create depth and interest in a piece of jewelry. We will use a wide variety of of techniques and materials. You are welcome to bring a small found object or treasure to incorporate in your creation, and or an image you would like to dissect and depict in your piece of jewelry. Techniques will include rivets, tabs, texture, soldering ,sawing and tube setting small faceted gemstones. As findings you will make either a simple pin back or hanging mechanism for a pendant. Beginners are welcome as this project can be adjusted to multiple skill levels, otherwise jewelry sawing and soldering skills are helpful. A basic supply kit can be purchased for $25. 2 Sessions.
