Fire Chief Herbert Griffin answers your questions about the Raleigh Fire Department, just ask.

Dozens of firefighters worked to extinguish a massive blaze earlier this month at the Raleigh Convention Center in downtown Raleigh. No one was injured in the blaze, and fire crews were praised for their exemplary response. Raleigh Fire Chief Herbert Griffin took the opportunity to highlight the significance of high-rise training for firefighters.

Question: Why is specialized training so important?

Response: High-rise training is crucial for the Raleigh Fire Department as the city continues to grow and become densely populated with high-rise structures. Effective training helps firefighters operate safely, efficiently, and strategically in these complex environments.

We understand these buildings present unique challenges that differ greatly from typical residential or low-rise fire response. With the City of Raleigh having more than 70 high-rise buildings, our fire stations routinely conduct pre-fire plans that include site visits and simulated training. Raleigh Fire members are required to attend a full-scale high-rise training scenario annually.

Key benefits of high-rise training include:

  • Firefighter safety
  • Efficient fire operations
  • Faster organized fire response
  • Better command and coordination
  • Enhanced decision-making
  • Enhanced familiarity with building systems
  • Better occupant rescue and scene management

In essence, high-rise training transforms high-risk, infrequent incidents into manageable operations helping reduce loss of life and property.
