East Cabarrus Green Street Project

Status Updates Project Information

In 2009, Cabarrus Street was identified in the 2030 Comprehensive as a priority Green Street (see map DT-4, on page 340 in the plan). In 2013 the city prioritized streetscape projects city wide, and East Cabarrus received a high ranking due to pedestrian safety and demand, as well as being in a reinvestment area with a potential for strong return on investment. The project area is from Wilmington Street to Swain Street along East Cabarrus in downtown Raleigh and the East Raleigh-South Park Historic District.

Status Updates

A project open house was held in conjunction with the Central CAC meeting on October 6, 2014. City staff are currently refining the draft plan and conducting outreach to institutions and groups along the street. The next step will be to apply for a certificate of appropriateness from the Raleigh Historic Development Commission.

Project Information

The East Cabarrus Green Street will focus on improvements to make the street a safer and more inviting pedestrian environment while installing green infrastructure to improve water quality and reduce energy consumption. Improved and additional sidewalks, stormwater infiltration in landscaped curb extensions, and improved LED street lighting are being considered for the project. The plan may also serve the function of an adopted streetscape plan in the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO).
