Learn the fundamentals of handbuilding with clay in this fun and creative class for teens. Students will explore pinch, slab, and coil techniques, as well as basic glazing methods. Projects may include functional pottery, such as mugs and bowls, imaginative sculpture, and ceramic jewelry. Students are encouraged to follow their own ideas while building skills and confidence with clay. Projects will be left for firing and available for pickup two weeks after the last class. Come join us as we read a fun themed book together and then build a clay project based on the book. We will build the clay piece on day 1 and glaze it on Day 2. In this delightful activity, you'll learn the mesmerizing art of water-marbling and transform it into unique Valentine's Day cards. Once they've mastered the basics, they'll use their new skills to craft personalized marbled cards, perfect for sharing with loved ones, friends, or keeping as cherished mementos. Learn to bring fabric into the three dimensions by stuffing it, wrapping it, twisting it, stitching it and knotting it in an endless array of ways. This is a great class to let go of preconceived ideas, experiment and discover new visual languages. We will be incorporating all manner of repurposed materials so feel free to donate or bring to class scraps of fabric, thread, yarn, wire, and other materials that might be incorporated into your pieces. In this class, we will explore the planographic printmaking process of lithography, which operates on the principle that oil and water don’t mix. Waterless lithography is a versatile process that utilizes the repellant characteristics of silicone to replace the toxic chemicals typically associated with traditional stone lithography. Students will learn platemaking, printing, and problem-solving strategies of creating reproducible drawn images. Beginning, intermediate, and advanced skill levels are welcome! In this class we will focus on creating one composition that we will repeat in four different mediums; illustration, stitching, lino print, and sculptural collage. The aim of this class is to focus on different processes and see how that could affect the type of image that we started with. By using the same image for all four iterations, we can place them side by side to see the differences in stark contrast. Play with different mediums and possibly learn something new, all while creating four thought provoking works of art that can be displayed together or separately. Register for Painting - Intro to Landscape Painting Part 1
This course is for painters who wish to work on developing their artistic and technical skills using the subject matter of landscape. Students may choose to use either the mediums of oil or acrylic to further their knowledge and technical skill in painting. This class is open to students of all levels. The instructor will provide three sets of reference photos for the students to use (an 8 x 10 black and white, and color photo will be provided for each painting). The demonstrations that the instructor will provide will be based the reference photos provided by the instructor. Lab fee of $15 is due at first class and payable directly to the instructor in the form of cash or check for the cost of handouts, color charts, and reference photos for this class. Cuttlefish bone casting is a simple, traditional metal casting technique that takes advantage of the splendid properties of a fine, porous bone-like internal organ that is shared by all members of the cuttlefish family. Cuttlefish bone is able to withstand high temperatures and is easily carved. It serves as mold-making material for small metal casting to create jewelry and small sculptural objects. The finished product has a unique wood-grained looking texture. Come create something with “fish” bones and molten metal! Pre-requisite of Beginning Metals at either Pullen or Sertoma. Presenting a gift in a copper container that you have made is really two gifts! We will transform a flat piece of copper into a round lidded container that is decorated with pattern, overlays, rivets, or gemstones and a special lid closure. A kit will be available for purchase from instructor for $25, and will include copper sheet, solder, saw blades, sandpaper, and more. You are also welcome to bring your own materials. Soldering skills are a must. 2 sessions. Instructor: Terry Thompson.
