Artist Statement
My work always begins with drawing. Sometimes when I’m not sure what to draw, I draw piles of things that balance this way and that. Many years ago I learned about the fascinating culture surrounding cairns.
Here’s a quote from author David Williams, author of the 2012 book Cairns, Messengers in Stone: Cairns mark territorial boundaries, good hunting grounds, places of danger, burial spots of dead relatives, territories of historical significance, sites to appease a deity, and locations to seek good luck.

Artist Bio
Susan Martin is a printmaker and teaching artist (at Pullen Arts Center and throughout the Triangle) based in Raleigh, North Carolina. She specializes in small editions of traditionally made hand-pulled intaglio prints. When not emerged in art, Susan enjoys time with her offspring and her adopted pit mix. She is also the co-founder of Triangle Printmakers Collective, a traditional printmaking studio focusing on the timeless beauty of printed work.

Located at our first-floor entrance, the chalk mural wall provides invited artists with a blank canvas to create new artworks on the wall every two to three months.
