What's That Smell on the Greenway?

Nothing! Raleigh Water Team Keeps Greenways Odor-Free

We want you to picture walking down your favorite greenway path, right now… forget about your phone ringing or the stack of emails lighting up your inbox, don’t worry about that Teams meeting it isn’t until later… It’s time to lock in.

Ok… close your eyes and imagine you’re strolling down a City of Raleigh greenway. You can hear the birds chirping, you feel a slight breeze from a biker passing saying “on your left” and you take a deep breath in…. Do you smell that?

*Cue cricket noises*

Wait we don’t smell anything either! (Even with sewer pipes running under our feet).

Here’s why…

Our City’s beautiful greenways stretch on for over 100 miles! Some of the paths winding through Raleigh might be sitting over sewer pipes, which have the potential to smell. No worries, the Raleigh Water team has you covered… or should we say, ‘we have the sewer lines covered.’

Resaved greenway manhole

Here’s how…

The picture above is an elevated manhole. These can be seen on some of the local trails and any gases that escape, are released above ground levels… meaning you can walk in peace.  Out of sight, out of smell… the team also uses sealed manholes which keep odors leaking out along busy paths. There are also vent pipes spaced out along the greenway help reduce unwanted scents during an afternoon jog.

Although we don’t always see the hard work the team does or smell it, Raleigh Water employees are out in the community keeping the City bright and fresh.
