Motivated by a desire to help children affected by Hurricane Helene, Raleigh Water employee Michael Carpenter organized a two-month toy drive. The community responded generously, with City of Raleigh employees and nearly two dozen organizations supporting the effort.
Carpenter, who had never organized a toy drive before, was unsure of how it would turn out. However, the community's generosity quickly put his worries to rest.
The impressive haul included more than 1,200 unwrapped gifts, featuring 23 bikes and four tricycles (with helmets), and a wide range of toys – from dolls and trucks to games and books – ensuring something special for every child.
"It's about reaching out to kids we may never meet, but who need a little extra cheer during challenging times," said Carpenter.
With help from the Pantheon Project and the Marines, Carpenter and coworker Jeff Clark ensured the toys reached children in the most remote and underserved parts of western North Carolina. The Marines planned to airdrop the toys to various communities Dec. 13.
Carpenter is deeply grateful for the outpouring of generosity, knowing these gifts will bring smiles to countless faces and a touch of magic to the holiday season.
