Here in the City of Raleigh, we’re heading into prime fall foliage season! Think of bright bursts of yellow, red and orange decorating our beautiful city trees — we are the City of Oaks, after all.
While we the enjoy leaf-changing season, one of the many great viewing areas could be right in our backyard: Falls Lake. And if you didn’t know, Raleigh Water has a couple connections to it.
Here are five fast facts about Falls Lake:
- Falls Lake is the source of most of Raleigh’s drinking water. The reservoir is located in northern Wake County.
- Water from Falls Lake is treated at the E.M. Johnson Water Treatment Plant, which processes an average of 41 million gallons per day.
- Falls Lake was created in 1978 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to help prevent flooding and supply water to our communities.
- The Falls Lake Watershed spans multiple counties and directly affects the quality of Raleigh’s water. Our customers help maintain these watersheds — and you can see your contribution on your water bill. Healthy watersheds are essential for keeping our drinking water clean and safe.
- Raleigh Water continuously monitors water quality from Falls Lake to meet and exceed EPA Safe Drinking Water Act standards. You can learn more about our water lab.
