What’s Changing on Six Forks Road—and Why It Matters

We're making the area safer and easier to navigate for everyone.

There’s a lot happening along Six Forks Road—and it’s all about making the area safer, more connected, and easier to navigate for everyone who lives, works, or travels through the Midtown area.

What's Changing?

From Rowan Street to Millbrook Road, you’ll start seeing:

  • New sidewalks to fill in missing links;
  • Better curb ramps for accessibility;
  • Upgraded traffic signals and signs for increased crossing safety;
  • Clearer pavement markings;
  • Transit shelters for a more comfortable wait; and,
  • Public artwork to help bring the area to life.

These small changes add up to big improvements for safety, here and across Raleigh. Whether you’re walking, driving, or catching the bus—our goal is to make every trip safer and more enjoyable.

Slowing Things Down Where It Matters Most

Nobody likes cars speeding through their neighborhood—and we’re working to do something about it.

As part of a separate effort from the Six Forks Road improvements, we’re tackling fast traffic on nearby residential streets by bringing in traffic calming projects. These are small changes like speed humps or curb extensions that help slow drivers down and keep neighborhoods safer.

Right now, we’re working with residents on three streets near Midtown:

  • Northwood Drive;
  • Bellevue Road; and,
  • Steinbeck Drive.

Neighbors had a chance to vote on proposed changes, and final ballot results will be posted on Aug. 1. From there, projects will go to City Council later this year for review and possible approval.
