New RRFBs Installed on Buck Jones Road to Improve Pedestrian Safety

The City of Raleigh has installed Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons, or RRFBs, at a crosswalk on Buck Jones Road. The crosswalk is just north of I-40, near the intersection of Buck Jones Road and South Valley Court.

Many people walk in this area to access a high school, a church, bus stops, and neighborhoods. This project will improve safety for pedestrians as they cross Buck Jones Road.

To use the RRFB, a pedestrian pushes the button to activate the warning lights. This causes the warning lights to flash, signaling to drivers that someone is waiting to cross the street. Once vehicles have stopped, the pedestrian can safely cross the street.

The Federal Highway Administration has studied RRFBs and recommends them as a proven safety countermeasure. RRFBs can reduce the risk of pedestrian crashes by about half.

This safety upgrade was installed by our Signs and Pavement Markings group and our Traffic Signals group, who work hard every day to make Raleigh’s roads safer.
