The City of Raleigh is committed to making neighborhoods safer and more enjoyable by tackling traffic problems that affect daily life. Through the Neighborhood Traffic Management Program (NTMP), residents can work with the City to create safer streets for everyone, whether they drive, bike, walk, or use public transit.
Safer Streets Through Teamwork
The NTMP works with neighbors to find and solve traffic issues, focusing on keeping vehicle speeds safe on residential streets. The process starts with a detailed look at traffic patterns, speeds, and safety concerns. From there, the City develops solutions that meet the community's needs.
NTMP Success in 2024
In 2024, the NTMP made big improvements in neighborhood safety:
- Lower Speed Limits: Speed limits were reduced on 139 streets (34.21 miles total) to encourage safer driving.
- New Stop Signs: Sixteen multiway stops were added, along with two new traffic signals, with more under review.
- Traffic Calming Projects:
- Fifteen projects began in 2024 and should finish by summer 2025.
- Sidewalks were added near Wildwood Forest Elementary as part of the Safe Routes to School program.
- Partnerships with BikeRaleigh improved cycling options, adding six new bikeways and one buffered bike lane.
Looking Ahead
The City has exciting plans for 2025 and beyond:
- New Projects Approved: Seventeen projects will start in spring 2025, including six bikeways, one cycle track, and upgrades to two bike lanes.
- Projects Under Review: Twenty more projects are being reviewed, with neighborhoods providing input. City Council will vote on these plans in early 2025, and construction will begin in spring/summer 2026.
Building a Shared Vision
The NTMP’s goal is to give Raleigh residents safer and more welcoming streets. By teaming up with neighbors, schools, and cycling advocates, the program is helping create neighborhoods that are safe, livable, and easy to get around.
