Pathogens Overview

Pathogens are bacteria, viruses, or protozoa that can cause diseases ranging from mild stomach upsets to more serious illnesses like hepatitis A. Pathogens can enter our waterways and recreational areas from the following sources:

  1. Pet waste and livestock
  2. Human waste
  3. Trash
  4. Sewer lines and sewer overflows
  5. Septic systems
  6. Landfills

Preventing Pathogens from Stormwater

Here are a few ways you can prevent pathogen pollution:

  • Pick up after pets and throw away waste in trash cans or pet waste stations.
  • Throw away trash and litter.
  • Never flush wipes or pour grease down the drain to prevent sanitary sewer overflows.
