Pathogens Overview

Pathogens cause disease in humans and animals and are a type of stormwater pollution that can exist in our waterways and recreational areas. Pathogens can be bacteria, viruses, or a protozoa and can cause a variety if illnesses in humans that range from mild gastrointestinal upsets to more serious illnesses such as hepatitis A.

Common Sources of Pathogen Pollutants

  1. Pet waste and livestock
  2. Human waste
  3. Trash
  4. Sewer lines and sewer overflows
  5. Septic systems
  6. Landfills

How to Prevent Pathogens from Entering Stormwater

  • Pick up after pets and dispose of waste in the trash or use pet waste stations at Raleigh public parks.
  • Dispose of trash and litter
  • Report Sanitary Sewer Overflows
